Holiday Shopping Tips
As the season
of holiday gift-giving starts, the Better Business Bureau offers some advice
for shoppers getting ready to enter the buying rush.
- Set a realistic budget and stick to
it.
Also make a list of the gifts you would like to give. This can help you
avoid buying on impulse gifts that may be inappropriate or too expensive.
- Compare prices and shop carefully. Holiday
"sales" and "markdowns" sometimes aren't the bargains
they appear to be. Read catalogs and advertisements to compare prices for
the same or similar merchandise to determine whether a holiday sale price
is really a bargain. The internet provides an easy means to do
pre-shopping research.
- Before making a
purchase ask the merchant about its refund and exchange policy. A store is not
obligated to accept items for refund, exchange or credit unless the item
is defective or was misrepresented. Never assume that the merchandise can
be returned. Refund and exchange policies vary from store to store, so
before making a purchase, inquire about and completely understand the
store's policy. To make the process easier, be sure to save all tags and
receipts, and bring the merchandise back in good condition and as soon as
possible. Remember that some stores have a time limit for returns.
- Be informed about your rights when
placing orders through catalogs, mail order, TV shopping networks, and
online venues. Ask about delivery times, delivery costs, and how returns are
handled. Check the company's reliability
report with the Better Business Bureau.
- Use caution if you're considering
playing Cyber-Santa this year. More products are available online this
holiday season than ever before. While some consumers access online
merchants to do pre-shopping research, an increasing number are becoming
more comfortable purchasing goods via the internet. If you're not familiar
with the merchant or the company, contact your BBB for a report. Visit the Better Business Bureau's BBBOnLine
site for additional information regarding online businesses.
- Buy appropriate toys for children. Keep in mind the
child's age and abilities. Use age guidelines on toy packages, but also
consider the particular child you're buying for and whether he or she is
ready for the toy. The Consumer
Product Safety Commission has tips on selecting safe toys.
- Be on your guard at all times when
shopping. Never leave your wallet, credit card, or purse on a counter.
Don't get overloaded with packages or lose track of your children if they
are accompanying you. Shop with a companion or ask for a security escort
to your car.
- Give but give wisely. If you're
approached in person for a donation, don't give if you're pressured or if
the solicitor is vague. Ask for written information to review. If the
appeal is genuine, your donation will be just as appreciated later.

giving advice and information on charities meeting CBBB ethical
guidelines.
