CHICAGO, IL – April 16, 2013 – Charity scammers strike after tragedies, and at least one poorly-conceived charity scam has already emerged in the wake of the explosions at the finish line of the Boston Marathon yesterday. The Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois (BBB) is alerting consumers of the possibility of phony charity solicitations, supposedly on behalf of the families of victims of the Boston Marathon tragedy.

In the wake of a recent Sabres ticket scam the Better Business Bureau is warning consumers that scammers are always lurking hoping to dupe eager fans into purchasing phony tickets. A shorter season places some hockey games in high demand and sadly BBB experience proves as fan interest increases scalper interest does as well. Some scalpers create fake tickets and sell them to unknowing fans. It can be devastating to be turned away at the door for any event because the tickets you purchased are counterfeit.

The Better Business Bureau reports a phone scam that’s making the rounds in which the caller claims to be from Microsoft or other representatives from computer software companies. The caller offers to solve a computer problem or sell a software license, all in an effort to gain remote control access to the consumer’s computer.

The Better Business Bureau has received calls that scammers have been making phone calls posing as representatives of the National Do Not Call Registry. The calls claim to provide an opportunity to sign up for the registry or ask consumers to verify their info. Of course, the callers are really trying to solicit personal information, which opens individuals up to identity fraud.
