The Better Business Bureau reports new activity for a phone scam that’s making the rounds in which the caller claims to be from Microsoft, a trusted household name. The caller offers to solve a computer problem or sell a software license, all in an effort to gain remote control access to the consumer’s computer.

When a small plumbing company got an email yesterday from BBB saying they’d had a complaint filed against them, they took it seriously. After all, the company is a BBB Accredited Business and they have not had a complaint filed against them before. What they got, however, was much worse than a complaint from an unhappy customer. The email was a fake, a phishing scam that downloaded viruses on two of the small business’s computers, which had to be wiped clean in order to get rid of the malware infection. Fortunately for the plumbing company, the virus didn’t have a chance to steal any banking information.

Consumer savvy, smart shopping and common sense all had a great year, according to the Better Business Bureau. Consumers asked BBB for help more than 103 million times in 2011, up from 87 million in 2010 and the highest rate in the organization’s 100-year history. Filings of formal complaints against businesses rose slightly for the Upstate New York region at 15,609 in 2011 up slightly from 14,416 in 2010. Across the U.S. and Canada complaints were down from 927,000 in 2011 compared to just over one million in 2010.

Millions of Americans receive a steady string of automated telephone calls from “Rachel” at Cardholder Services, who claims your “credit card interest rates may increase” or wants to help you “lower your credit card rates.” The Better Business Bureau warns consumers these robocalls often come from criminals who are trying to obtain your credit card information in order to use it for their own criminal enterprise.
