Major Corporations Join Universities and Colleges to Help with Career Placement
Employment challenges face the nation’s nearly 2.6 million post-9/11 combat veterans and their families with many residing here in Western New York. Whether they’re unemployed or underemployed veterans often face problems trying to form new careers out of the service. With gainful employment as their goal, Better Business Bureau along with Medaille College, Veterans One-Stop Center of Western New York, AUSA WNY Chapter, and Buffalo Paradigm will host the first annual “Veteran Career and College Expo” – an employment and job readiness event for veterans and their spouses. It will be held Saturday, November 9 at Medaille College in Buffalo.
"Our partners and BBB are proud to support and serve our military community,” said Warren Clark,President of Better Business Bureau serving Upstate New York. “While we all provide different military resources individually - collectively we’re working to secure gainful employment for all those who have served and those who made sacrifices back home.”
There are many employment challenges facing our veterans. Consider veterans’ ages 20-24 experience unemployment at a rate 10.1% higher than that of their non-veteran peers of the same age. Spouses seeking employment suffer from relocations and inability to build consistent job performance.
Organizers of the “Veteran Career and College Expo” have identified nearly 35 local businesses and colleges from Western New York who stand ready to leverage the unique skills, training, and experiences veterans and their spouses have to offer. Employers with current employment will be present and ready to offer brighter futures for attendees. Universities and Colleges at the Expo will offer assistance to veterans in need of training with current employers as well as answer questions pertaining to future education or maximizing their G.I. Bill benefits. In addition, workshops will run throughout the event on the topics of resume writing, tips and techniques for interviewing, and transitioning from military to civilian life. Registration is encouraged by going to Eventbrite online.
