To help consumers and businesses alike, the BBB and Consumer Credit Counseling Services of Buffalo (CCCS) held the second annual “Secure Your ID Day” this past Saturday at E.C.C. North Campus. Nearly 600 Western New Yorkers attended the event to have their personal documents destroyed responsibly at no charge thanks to event sponsor Shred-it who reported that 10,000 pounds or 5 tons of material were properly destroyed.
Many also attended information sessions to learn steps they should take to prevent becoming an identity theft victim and others gained insight about what to watch for on their credit report which was pulled on-site by request. In 2008, 10 million Americans fell victim to identity theft fraud costing more than $48 million. The BBB and CCCS are working to bring that number down and raise public awareness to prevent the silent crime that could strike anyone as well as place focus on this important aspect of overall personal financial literacy.
This event was held to kickoff National Protect Your Identity Week which runs throughout this Saturday. Individuals are encouraged to take the “Identity Theft Risk Quiz” this week by clicking here. “Secure Your ID Day” is a national document destruction event held annually by the Better Business Bureau system across the country.
