"The BBB does not rush to expel members, but it is something we must do when members fail to abide by the standards. The Better Business Bureau is not a club. It is an ethics based organization, which makes adherence to standards important. Those standards are what the consuming public has come to trust, and are why surveys show consumers prefer doing business with a BBB member. ", explained David Polino, president of the BBB.

To qualify and maintain membership in the BBB, a company must meet all 13 of the Bureau's membership standards. According to the requisites for membership, a company must promptly respond to any and all complaints forwarded by the Bureau, and make good faith efforts to resolve all such complaints in accordance with generally accepted good business practices. In the case of Knapp Pools and Construction, the bureau revoked their membership due to a pattern of unresolved and unanswered complaints alleging poor workmanship and/or delays in completing work.  TLC Roofing and Village Construction were expelled due to an unanswered complaint.

Some of the Bureau's other standards for membership include requirements that companies cooperate with the BBB's efforts and activities to promote self-regulation, and that they eliminate the underlying causes of complaint patterns brought to members' attention by the Better Business Bureau.

Under the Bureau's by-laws, all final actions taken by the Board of Directors to exaonerate, suspend or expel a member firm are matter of public record.
